Mantles are stand-ins for non-X-Men Marvel characters. In order to preserve the server’s primary focus on the X-Men and mutantkind, major Marvel figures outside of the X-Men do not exist directly within the setting. Instead, certain individuals may inherit Mantles original reinterpretations inspired by those figures. For example, rather than Matthew Murdock existing within Universe-697, a roleplayer may create a character such as Richard Murdock, this universe’s equivalent of the Man Without Fear. Mantles are rare and released gradually over time in waves to prevent the setting from losing its X-Men identity. Each Mantle carries unique passives, themes, reputations, and narrative significance inspired by the original character while still allowing players creative freedom to make the role their own.
The current limit of mantles that one person can have is 2.
Mantles are acquired through an application and overclaim process. When a Mantle is officially released, roleplayers may apply by submitting a 500 word (minimum) character concept based on that universe’s interpretation of the role. If multiple roleplayers apply for the same Mantle, the applications enter an overclaim review where staff evaluate and vote on the strongest submission. Staff decisions are based on overall writing quality, creativity, activity, characterization.
